Attention span: 8/10 AI could be improved. Controls: 9/10 Fully costumizable keys. Implementation: 9/10 All beautifully done. Overall: 9/10 Another excellent game for the 89. I will start off by mentioning that I am not exactly a fan of the fighting game genre. On calculators, I have only played a game that I think was called ZFight for the 85 or 86. On other platforms, my experience with fighting games is very limited. In no way do I dislike "violence" in these games, but I am just not a fan of them. ZFight was not the greatest fighting game on a calculator, or even a good game period. But it was an original, and it was in ASM, as compared to the rest of the "fighting" (i.e. text) games done in BASIC. Not to say that these games where bad. But now comes in Street Fighter II v0.18 Beta. When I was made aware of this game's existence, I was expecting something very much like ZFight, even though I am fully aware of the 89's capabilities. But the second I turned on this game my jaw dropped to the floor. I could not believe my eyes. The graphics in this game are incredible to say the least. Four shades of gray, very well animated characters, many realistic grayscale backgrounds and much more eye candy make this game very wonderful. But we all know that graphics do not solely make a game. This game includes single player and multiplayer modes. Two players are able to play against each other either on the same calc on through a link cable. There is even a CPU-vs-CPU option which lets you catch some pointers. But this game is not all perfect. So far, only two characters have been included. Ken and Ryu are the only two selectable characters. Another bothersome problem about this game is the size of it. The backgrounds (which are purely optional) can take up quite a bit of space. But not to worry, I was able to archive all the files that came with this game, leaving more than sufficient ram to allow it to run. Another small problem is that the AI in the game isn't exactly the best. Of course, the first time I played it, the CPU kicked my butt all the way into next week. But after 4 or 5 plays, I (the one who never plays fighting games) was doing extremely well against the CPU. There are 3 combo moves that I know off for this game. Although I found it hard for me to pull them off, of course, the CPU could pull them off one after the other. In short, Street Fighter II v0.18 Beta is an excellent game that deserves much praise. The graphics are excellent and the gameplay is good. The 2 player features also add more to the game. While the AI is a bit lacking, one must remember that this is still a beta version and there could be many improvements to come. Street Fighter II v0.18 Beta is a great game and I don't think there is much more to be said about it.
