Attention span: 3/10 A memory error every few minutes Controls: 4/10 Slow during battle Implementation: 4/10 Fairly large and prone to crashes Overall: 3/10 There are better RPGs elsewhere
The assembly game Diablo is hardly assembly at all. This RPG developed by Harper Maddox shows that, although ASM can be used to make pictures in what is otherwise a BASIC program, it doesn’t mean that the application will be any better.
This poor, memory-managed file often slows down as the minutes roll by until finally a memory error occurs and causes the user to lose all of his progress. The constant use of save-restart is needed to keep the game fresh.
Enemies and play action are also not original. The bat is just a couple of lines while other enemies offer little more. Lists are used for the save data, so just use the statistics editor to get to level 5000 with all the spells and gold.
Diablo needs a lot of work. As the author comments in the readme file, he would like to see if anyone can optimize the code. However, since the game was written in 1997, I doubt this program will ever be touched again. |
