LEMMINGZ 83/83+ for Ion-compatible shells

by Matthew Roberts (mattrob@wam.umd.edu, meroberts@chesapeake.net)

Thanks for playing Lemmingz. As always, the level packs used
with Lemmingz can be transfered from the 83 to the 83+ without any
problem. There is also a Windows level editor that will allow you to
quickly and easily make your own level packs. Look for it, along with
tons of additional level packs, on ticalc.org!

GETTING LEMMINGZ TO RUN

NOTE: It's a good idea to re-run ION after you put a new game
on your calculator.
In order for Lemmingz to work, it must be on the calculator
along with exactly one level pack (lempack). One and only one lempack
may be in RAM, even though if you have an 83+ you may store spares in
the archive.

WHAT IS LEMMINGZ?

Lemmingz is sort of an action-puzzle game. Your challenge is
to get as many lemmingz as possible into the exit-door in each level,
and you only have a short amount of time. By default, a lemming just
walks straight ahead. If he falls off a cliff, he may splatter at the
bottom. If he walks off the screen, he will die. You must try to stop
that from happening. You do that by changing the lemmingz into these
different types:

Basher - digs a hole to the side
Builder - builds a short set of steps
Blocker - does not allow lemmingz on either side to pass by
Climber - can climb walls. Lasts indefinetly.
Digger - digs a hole straight down
Exploder - Detonates after 5 seconds
Floater - won't die in a fall. Lasts indefinetly.
Miner - digs a hole with a shallow downslope

KEYS

The top 8 keys on the calculator are used to change the
lemming type. They are arranged in alphabetical order with respect
to the keys. Here are the assignments:

	Y= - Basher
	WINDOW - Blocker
	ZOOM - Builder
	TRACE - Climber
	GRAPH - Digger
	2nd - Exploder
	MODE - Floater
	DEL - Miner

Don't worry, you will remember the keys after you've played
for a few minutes.

The arrow keys are used to select a lemming by position the
"selection box" over it. When the selection box is over a lemming, the
type of the lemming will appear in the upper-left hand corner,
followed by a carat indicating the direction that lemming is moving.
Following the directional carat is a message telling you the number
of that particular type remaining, if applicable. At this point, you
can use the 8 keys described above to change the lemming type. Certain
types of lemmingz cannot be turned into other types, and lemmingz can
have several different types at once. For example, a lemming can be a
climber, a floater, be getting ready to explode, AND be digging a hole
at the same time.

When in play, CLEAR exits to the main menu. Actually, the
first time you hit CLEAR, all your lemmingz will be turned into
exploders. You can either wait for them to blow, then retry the
level, or hit CLEAR a second time to take you to the main menu.
Also note that ENTER pauses. When paused, you can still move
the cursor around, whether it is to get someplace in a hurry or to see
what kind of lemming a certain lemming is.
The carat (^) key displays a complete list of the number of
Lemmingz you have, along with the keys that activate them.

GETTING THE BEST PICTURE

Lemmings has sort of a two-color grayscale arrangement. By
adjusting your calculator's contrast, you can make the lemmings and
selection box etc. stand out from the land. Experiment to find which
level of contrast suits you best.

THE MAIN MENU

New Game - starts you in the current lempack at level 1.
Level Code - use a previously obtained level code to skip
the levels you have already beaten.
	Grayscale:On/Off - Toggles the grayscale
	Exit - exits.

TIPS FOR COMPLETING LEVELS

My only suggestion is that you start with the beginner.83p
lempack, included with the game, unless you have prior experience
with lemmingz.
Note that the level cannot be finished unless all the lemmingz
are either out or dead. Thus, when you have enough lemmingz in to win
or you know you'll never win, use CLEAR to blow up all the remaining
lemmingz.

BUG FIXES FOR THIS VERSION

Since the original, there have been several bug fixes. Here are
the changes made so far:

	Grayscale On/Off feature
Harder for lemmingz to violate metal boxes
	Population screen
	Fixed unlimited exploders

IN CONCLUSION

Thanks to Chris Tremblay, author of Lemmingz for the 86, for
use of the Lemmingz name, and to Rusty Wagner, who wrote VTI, which
was an invaluable tool during the debugging of the game.
Also, thanks to those of you who have written in about the
bugs and errors in the program.

If you have any bugs to report, email me and I will try to
post an update as soon as possible. And hey, where were you people
with Coaster 83? I got like 2 emails about that game. It was hard to
write, too! But, as always, I must promise that, if you continue to
play your 83/83+, I will continue to write top-of-the-line games for
you.
