Knowing how the memory effect happens is the first step to combating it. The
memory effect happens because "whiskers" of metal form between the poles as
Ni and Cd fall out of solution. Once reduced, the metals cannot become part
of the solution again and reduce the efficiency of the battery. By
traumatising the battery, the whiskers can be destroyed. The fragments of
solidified metal do not hold a charge any more, but the remaining solution
can still function and isn't impeded by the whiskers. Ahh... Chemistry is
good.
