TI-H: New floppy comments

Okay, after closer examination I have decided the USB idea would not be as
easy as I had though. I tried looking up some information about the regular
everyday NEC interface for floppy drives and I haven't been able to come up
with much except the pin-out and that does very little good. What I need to
find out is what hardware (controller chip etc.) is this hooked up to and
what protocol the rest of the mother board on a computer uses to communicate
with it. From the looks of the pin out on the drive it seems to be a sort
of serial interface and I'm wondering if it would be possible to build some
sort of link either to it directly or using the same chip that is found on
the motherboard so that I could hook a calc up without using an extra
microcontroller and do most of the grunt work in software. Any ideas where
to get such enlightenment?
