But how do you connect to a shell? do you hook up a modem to the link port?
And then use the server as a sort of proxy/router (for lack of better
words)?

BTW, a co-worker of mine has a free shell service up. telnet to
zippy.shellyeah.org and log in as newuser to create your account. You get an
email account, 7 MB quota, 4 shell types, access to news feed, IRC, etc.
It's limited, but hey, it's free :)
