Well the easiest for me to use was a graph-link cable. With that and a few
other components you can use it to also communicate with a computer via the
serial port. I am not saying this is a great design just easy and
convenient. And yes it is direct line of site so unless you have some
binoculars to spot the receiver, you farthest distance you can be is in
eyesight range. Nothing special, just a neat idea.

| range (i suppose that a laser has more range than the IR), and you are
| willing to give up ease of use (seeing as the point of lasers is that the
| light doesn't diffuse, then you need a DIRECT line of sight, no just kind
| of there, but DIRECT), then why also give up speed? the graphlink cuts you
| down to 9600 bps, while raw communitcation can get you 15100 bps
