The metal foil serves two purposes:

1: To shield both the calc and external devices from Electromagnetic 
interference prodced by either the calc or the external device.

2: To cover the circuit board in the battery case. If it were not there, 
some batteries could short or even lead power into the wrong traces by 
touching them.

It will not hurt the calc to remove it, however, don't use batteries 
with metal outsides, and especialy any battery that has the paper or 
plastic label torn off, if you remove the foil.
