Um, the TI-86 does use a stereo 2.5mm jack.  It has two data lines
and a ground.  This gives the link the ability to send four different
signals, a data bit (1 or 0) and a status bit (ready or wait).
If you used a mono adapter, it would not damage your link, but you
would not be able to transmit data across it.  You MUST have a
stereo converter for proper transmitting.
