Any high end AVR is a piece of junk...  Unless its the 1200, the PICs can
be faster...  try the 68HC12/11/5/9/16 or any of those chips...  If you
need a highpower fully featured, low cost chip, try the NEC V25/20 or in
that range...  If you want to use intel, you can use te 188 or 186...

Basically, only the real small AVRs are actually what the docs say they
are...  The new AVRs are turning out to be a max of 8 and 4 MHz where the
old ones are 16...  Thats because the bigger and better the chip, the
slower it is at a low price...
