I'm the designer of the circuit, and if you use the appropriate cap 
sizes, then it should work fine.  I have tested it with a 2.2 uF, 10 
uF, and 100 uF caps and all worked fine.  Remember, the cap stores 
power to power the chip from the clock and data lines.  If the cap is 
too small, then there won't be enough power stored to power the chip.
