That's not a bad idea.  In fact, I think it's the most practical idea for
backlighting yet mentioned.  You could take an LED and drill a small hole
in the center (most of the colored casing is epoxy/plastic) and glue the
end of an optical fiber into it, then surround the screen with the fiber
(or transparent/translucent plastic rod or whatever).  This also has the
advantage that the LED could be located anywhere in the calculator where
there was room, not just under the LCD itself.
