Well, that was just the idea #1 which I presented some time ago and I
wanted to test if it would actually work. At least it's cheap and easy
to build...

Hmm...why so? It's just the way TI has done it. And the link port can be
quite freely programmed for any imaginable protocol. The TI link
protocol is only a piece of software, right?
