I would have to say that the calculator guesses until it comes up with the
right one.  Maybe that's why it takes a while to find the really BIG numbers
or really SMALL numbers.  I could be wrong...

Also, does any of this really belong on a BASIC list?  It's pointless to
bicker and carry the same thread on and on when it is irrelevant to the
list.

Don't worry, my original intent was to answer the question that was posted
about the solver on the ti-8x (except 89), not to comment on this crap with
long pointless message threads.
