That's right.  The 83 was designed as an "upgrade" of sorts to the 82, and
as such is backwards compatible to the 82.  The 83+ is a further upgrade and
is still compatible.  Similarly, the 86 is the upgrade to the 85, and the
89/92+ is the upgrade to the 92.  The 89 and 92+ have the distinction of
being the same calculator, the only difference is the size and arrangement
of the keyboard.

There is one possible exception.  The "upgraded" version often adds a
handful of functions that weren't on the original.  Therefore if you took an
86 program and put it on the 85, it might contain commands the 85 does not
recognize.  There is usually a way to alter the code to work around the
problem, however.
