Different extensions.  Files are compatible among model families (82/83(+),
85/86, 89/92(+)).

File types:
p = program
i = image
m = matrix
s = string
etc.
g = group, which contains other files, for instance 3 program files and an
image file, all of which are required for the particular program.  Group
files allow you to keep related files together in one file.  Kind of like a
zip file, only without compression.  You can use the Graph Link software to
ungroup a group file, but if you send the group file straight to the
calculator it will ungroup itself automatically.
