The grey cable has a PIC microcontroller in it to allow for MacIntosh
compatibility.  Its plug is 25-pin female to match with the old PC serial
ports.
The black cable eliminates the PIC, hense it is Windows only.  Its plug is
9-pin female since the 25-pin serial port has gone the way of the dinosaur.
 It is cheaper due to the PIC not being in there.
If you use Windows, the black cable is better, just because it's cheaper.
If you use Mac, you have to use the grey cable.
