ti-83 transfer probs.

I built a home link cable to transfer files from my calc to the
computer, using a parallel port and a TI-83, and now I am getting a few
problems that maybe you guys could help me out with:

1- I tried the link test software, and it came back with all 10s, and of
course there were a whole lot of "should be:" lines right beside
everyone one of them. Is this a signal of an incompatible parallel port?

2- The calc freezes when I plug the link cable into it when the cable is
connected to the port, it doesn't freeze when I start my computer in
command only even though it is plugged into the port.

3- I am using a program called "cal" to transfer files, and when I try
to send from the calc to the comp, I get a "header too large" on my
computer program, and an "error in transmit" on the calc.

4- When I used 1k resistors, I tested with a circuit tester, and there
was no data comming out on the opposite side of the resistor, so I
bypassed the resistors. I finally got some responce from my calculator
when I did this, and that was the above error. Before I had nothing
happening, as when receiving, the calc would sit there; at least now it
gives me an error.

NOTE: I used a circuit tester to ensure that there are no crossed wires,
and I used the schematics from http://linkcables.ticalc.org , under the
"$5 parallel port".

Help me! I've already spent $30 on this damn thing, and I've sacraficed
my calc to calc lead for this "project" and I want to get this thing
working. Any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks!
