Locking a 83

A few days ago, a classroom set calculator (ti-83) at my school was
locked up by one of the students. I decided to do the teacher a favor
and unlock it. The calculator had a picture of a horse on the screen,
and the busy indicator was locked up. The calculator didn't respond to
any key presses. I took out a battery, and put it back in. The
calculator turned itself back on, and the picture was still there. Only
after I took a battery and held down ON for a whole 20 secs, the
calculator said "Mem Reset". To be sure I resetted it again.

What is this? A virus, or a program designed to lock a calculator, or a
ti-os/basic bug (like the xstat one in the 85)? Any ideas?
