I had this problem as well, along with my TI-86.

I was using 3 different (same AWG) wire braided together to make my
cable. It was about 5 feet long. Linktest gave me great results. Even
thus, the cable didn't work.

I rebuilt my cable, using new diodes, and everything, new cable, and
much shorter cable. I was using telephone cable, 3 core solid copper
wire. (yes it is not quite flexible...) But it worked. Also the diodes
were soldered directly to the pins, last time, I soldered the diodes to
small extention wires, which I'm sure has no effect. But another thing
to consider, did you put too much heat to the diode? it may have damaged
the diode. If not, check your plug, and check the soldering (connecting
the plug to the rest of the cable.
