Basically, the 48's have much better symbolic math ability and both use
RPN and/or Algebraic entry. Additionally, the GX is highly expandable.
They also both have a huge library of built-in formlulas.  Stop by a store to
check out an HP48 and press the green shift key (lower left), followed by the
EQ LIB key (shifted 3) and scroll through the library.

While I can still use my TI-85, I greatly prefer my GX - precisely because
of RPN.  If you need of a calculator with the power of an 85/86 or G/GX,
you can handle RPN.
