I don't know a lot about circuit building either, but I managed to build
a perfectly working $4 link. I only used the components listed in the
schematic, and a little serial port connector. No additional wire was
needed as I soldered the leads of the components and the the wire out of
the TI-TI link together. I didn't use a board so that I could place the
whole link in a shrink tube which made it look really nice. I also found
that the people working at Radio Shack are very nice and will help you
figure out what to do.
