Link Cables (Re: Which one...)

There has been a great deal of discussion about home-built link cables
recently, so let me run down the options:

1. TI GRAPH-LINK (~$45) - It comes complete, works with every PC and all
calculator models, uses the "official" software, and is the only
cable that works with Macs. Note that DOS software is only available
for the TI-85 and TI-82 - TI-83 and TI-92 users must use the Windows
software (or Mac software, if they are not PC folks).

2. Parallel port (aka $5) - Homebuilt, much cheaper than the TI solution.
Currently works with the TI-85 and TI-92 only. This is the only cable
that the TI-85 emulator supports. It uses hacked versions of old TI
DOS software. Currently the only cable to link with the TI-92 under
DOS. Apparently does not work with all parallel ports.

3. Serial port (aka $4) - Homebuilt, cheap. Supposedly works with the
TI-85 and TI-82 - Only homebuilt cable that supports the 82 at
present. Uses "from scratch" DOS software.

4. Connect-85 - Most complicated homebuilt cable - is compatible with TI's
older, discontinued LINK-85 cable (which worked only with the TI-85
     and PC's).

Of these choices, the GRAPH-LINK wins in terms of compatibility and ease
of use. Of the homebuilt cables, the parallel port link is the preferred
option. If it does not work with your PC, or you have a TI-82, the serial
port link (not the Connect-85 cable) might work.

The GRAPH-LINK is the only cable that works with the TI-83.
