This is due to a longstanding problem with IBMs and serial ports... COM1
and COM3 share the same IRQ (4), and COM2 and COM4 share IRQ 3.


I assume your modem is on COM1:... Most IBM systems do not allow you to
change the IRQs on the onboard serial port... if you can on the modem, try
setting it for IRQ2, IRQ5 (preferred), or IRQ7 (not recommended)...


If you have a PS/2 stype (round) mouse connector, and nothing using COM2:,
set the 9 pin serial port to COM2 (jumper it inside, or (usually) do it in
BIOS Setup... I think it's F2 when you boot, then in Peripheral Setup or
