Ethernet DOESN'T use start and stop bits.  Most cable modem networks (the
*good* ones) use an ATM style backbone.

Ethernet data is sampled from a known clock which it gets from a preamble
generated by the ethernet cards.

1mbit is 128kbyte/s on ethernet.
