Actually, K means both 1000 and 1024, depending upon the subject you link it
to.

The usual uses the 1000 and is usually used in lowercase:
1kg = 1000g (grams)
1km = 1000m (meters)

Any computer-related uses the 1024 and is usually used in uppercase:
1Kb = 1024b (bits)
1KB = 1024B (bytes)
