The difference in color I think comes from an increase of battery power to the lcd (try turning your contrast all the way up), and shouldn't hurt the lcd at all besides taking a little extra battery life.  Sometimes also, grayscale appears as brownish orange when the batteries are low.
I don't think there are any possible hacks to get the blue and orange to display at the same time though unless you were able to control the power to individual raster lines.  But it might be possible, if you were somehow able to know when the lcd is blanking to change the number of scan lines, giving the effect of blue on the top of the screen, orange on the bottom.
