A86: New to ASM

I am new to asm, and I was making a text RPG in TI-BASIC, and then decided
to change to asm because it would make it faster.  I was wondering.  You
guys have heard of Joltima.  He has a.86s file.  What is in that file, and
how would I make a file like that, because I need to make a whole engine. 
It would be my own. But if anybody can help me, I would really like that. 
What software would be the best to use?  Assembly Studio 86?
