It doesn't check the contrast level because when you turn it on w/ the
contrast level up it doesnt give you a battery level message.  And it doesn't
disappear after changing the contrast when you force it to come up using
enter.

It might be that it doesn't return a battery level at all but has a flag or
something somwhere that is set when voltage drops below a certain level.  It
would be pretty easy electronically since applying more voltage to a certain
part of a transistor turns it off.  My knowledge of electronics isn't very
good but it sounds likely since it would only take a transistor to use but how
they get the other voltage to check it against I don't know the backup battery
maybe or a special circuit.  Of course what I probably just said is possibly
(likely) entirely wrong.
