who said he wanted to know how to do it for a shell? it could be for a
program that needs to make a string and check how much memory is left (like
slippy II). anyway shells on the 86 are more powerful. need i remind you
that linux runs on a shell on a pc? its the same thing--it doesnt have
anything to do with it being a shell it has to do with the power you can
use. it is exactly opposite as you stated. asm 86 is much more efficient and
powerful than the OS because the OS is protected and lacking
commands/routines when its doing its thing but it lets the user use the full
power of the processor and system in assembly. another thing: he wants to
see how much memory is left in a program and the OS wont let you do that in
basic.

This wasnt meant to be a flame but a wakeup call :)
