The slot on the HP48GX is just for memory expansion.  However, the link
port on it (and the 48G, perhaps the 38G too, though I don't know) is a
standard RS-232 port, albeit with a weird plug so in theory at least it
would be simple enough to hook a modem up to it.

Then again, it wouldn't be impossible to hook a modem up to a TI either
using Graphlink.
