A86: BASIC editor

Any one knows, or has an idea of how TI-OS makes the text
editing for BASIC programs? I mean, how do they manage to
have a 'file' that can grow?
Right now I can't think of anything not using an auxiliar
'file', but that implies that you need to have room in the
calc for at least twice the data size... or... do variables
are always 'compacted' in mem, or there are holes? Is there
a way to make a variable's size to grow?
