Make sure the LED is connected directly to pin 5, and connected through a
330 ohm resistor to pin 3. Check the polarity of the LED, too.. the
non-striped end (anode) should be connected to pin 5. Try plugging the
connector into the serial port with just those two components attached,
and see what happens.
