[A83] Re: New Shell From The Hays Corporation

First of all, this is from your website: "The Most Quality Games For The
Ti83 That Bill Nagel Stole From Us"
Somehow I doubt that Bill Nagel stole something from you.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Now to do a chronology of what has actually happened:
Summary: you inform us of a shell that you are making. We say it should be
compatible to Ion; you insult Joe Wingbermuerhle and say you hate Ion. Many
people provide rational reasons why your shell should be Ion compatible,
though some go a little too far.

Your opinion:
> Listen buster, we asked for suggestions right off the bat and you
>talked shit so now the heat is on, and if you cant handle the heat
> get off the stove.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Your message:
The Hays Corporation has been delevoping a new Ti83/83+ shell for the past
couple of months code named 'ASM X'. We are nearing completion, but in
order for our shell to compete well with others such as Ion, we are
wondering what kind of (realistic) features you would like to see
implimented in this new shell. We are open to all suggestions. But
remember, our goal is to keep it's size under to around 1000 bytes.

First reply: (I would say a fine suggestion.)
If you want people to use it, make sure it runs Ion programs. But why would
you want another shell, when Ion works?

Your response to the reply: (After this, nobody is on your side, as even
though you said you were open to all suggestions, the first comment relating
to Ion results in this.)
you see, that's just the thing that we dont like about Joe Wingbermuhel and
Ion. He makes it impossible for other programmers who want their shell's to
be heard of and used. He is an ass for all I'm concerned.

A later reply: (I would say quite proper.)
Having a good product doesn't make you evil. Thinking that your bad
product is better than someone else's good product does.

Another reply: (Not very nice, and perhaps not 100% correct.)
Plus, do you think you guys are gonna get a bunch of programmers who write
for ION to switch over to some brand-new not-so-great shell? I don't think
so.

Reply to above:
Who says it is not going to be a great shell?

Your reply: (Ion is so big partly because of its libraries, etc., and you
cannot hate Ion because "it is too good.")
Just because it is being developed by Hays doesn't mean that it will be
"not-so-great." We think that you will be surprized when our shell does
everything that Ion does and more, and is smaller in size.

And about support for Ion games. We are really trying to avoid this simply
because we hate Ion. However, if we must, we must, and if their is too much
demand for Ion support then it will either be added to the shell, or made as
an optional extension that you can download sepratly. However, we want to
avoid Ion as much as possible.

Apologetic reply: (apparently you are not satisfied, though.)
Sorry. I wasn't dissing Hays, just the fact that there isn't much need for
another shell. The need isn't so great cuz there isn't so much needed in
another shell. Sorry if u thought I was dissing your company. K?

Explanation for necessity of Ion compatibility:
For those of us on the 83-, having two shells, one to run Ion games and one
to run . . . um . . . other . . . games is simply not practical. We need
maximum room to keep everything else. I'm sure I'm not the only one to
have memory so full that I get a memory error for using more than half the
Home screen. Besides, what are you going to do, not have a routine to draw
sprites, generate random numbers, and do a FastCopy?

Another explanatory reply:
So you're upset that he wrote a good shell, for free, before you? Years
before you? If you want people to use your shell, then you have to make it
compatible with everything that is currently available. Did everyone hate
Dan Eble for releasing ZShell? I don't remember anyone complaining about
ZShell being so great that they couldn't make another shell. People did
make other shells, but they still supported ZShell. Should no one do
anything, because someone else might not like it later? You're either very
naive, or very stupid. Or are you just trolling because you have no life?

Your reply: (obviously you are completely incorrect, but might be true for
your shell ;-)
I don't know what everyone thinks is so good about Ion, if you think about
it, it kind of sucks, and you could probably remake Ion in BASIC with even
more features for not much larger then the size Ion is now.

Okay, that about wraps it up, of course there was a lot of insult exchanges
etc. between Matt and you, though quite possibly you deserved a lot of it.
