This is a direct quote from Dan Englander that he wrote to me a while back 
in ICQ.
"When a character is displayed on the home screen, a copy is also put in 
textShadow so that the calc knows what is on the homescreen.  (It recalls 
this, for example, after you display a menu and select something, and it 
needs to get the homescreen back)."
