In the U.S., you should register a copyright to legally protect the work.
Even lcweb.loc.gov's FAQ stongly recommends getting a registered copyright
if you are going into court over the issue.  The sealed envelope I
mentioned before will verify that you have a right to copyright and will
allow you to have time to obtain a registered copyright.
