BTW isn't it your keyboard that does this? You know, my old
keyboard would gladly accept Ctrl+Left+Up, but these new
ones cannot handle lots of combinations. (I found this
about while playing the original Death Rally. :) For
example I used to be able to press Y+Q+E+T on the old one
(good old Scream Tracker days...), but the new one cannot
detect this... So it might be that your PC hardware is the
cause.
