It's not that weird of a size.  For what it does, it is perfectly fine. 
Though, I think they would have far fewer problems if they'd gone with an
"inverted pin" design (whatever the real name is), similar to a PS/2 style
keyboard, USB, etc.  If you want connectors for it, go down to Radio Shack. 
I picked up a converter to 1/8 so I could try out sound a long time ago. 
Any Radio Shack should have converters and male and female ends.
