I think you mean if you call $0268 _instead_ of $4014 then your prog will 
only work on one rom version.  Since $4014 is the jump table entry, it can 
just be modified in a later rom version to do, for example, call $0269 
instead of call $0268 and all programs that still use $4014 will work just 
dandy.
