Isn't the hardware needed for an RF link fairly expensive?

 Cut the cable in half, strip part of the outer wire to expose the inner 
ones. 
  Then, just connect a transceiver to each half, and you've got a working 
 link.  It should act just like a normal link (but long range) so you could 
 transfer programs..do whatever.  Also, if you get a transceiver that has 
 channel settings on it, that makes it easier for the calc to recognize 
 others.  Instead of having a program try to figure out where the calcs are, 
 the hardware would take care of the job (for example, if you were doing some 
 sort of chatting program, switching channels would also switch chat rooms).
