It's very possible.  Think about what you're saying.  edit the FAT, adjust the entry as needed.
	Now, think about it this way.  edit the VAT, add a variable, exit your shell.  Not possible on the 82 yet, but it better be possible on a PC!
	In addition, to avoid these problems in the future, why don't we just stick with the old PKZIP or maybe WinZip, which is very capable in it's own right?

Nope.  Can't rename the file from File Manager.  File manager works the
same way DOS does to rename files.  To rename the files without using an
external DOS command, you will have to write a program to read the file in
and then write it out to a new file (if that is even possible which is
fairly unlikely to happen).
