Stratego v. 1.2

Introduction

Stratego is the classic board game by Milton Bradley, now available for your TI-83/83+! Stratego is a two-player only link game. This means that you can only play it by linking up your calculator with someone else who has the game and playing them. THERE IS NO ONE-PLAYER MODE.

Stratego has a lot of game files, and if you want to send it to someone, you may not send everything you need to. Basically, you need to send the program STRATEGO, any programs that start with the name ZS, like ZSCHECK, and Pic1 and Pic5.

You need about 9000 bytes of memory free to play Stratego.

Controls

New Game: Select this to start a new game. When you are asked to select a player number, make sure you and your opponent have different numbers.

Load Game: Choose this to load a game that you had been playing with a friend. Make sure your calculators are linked before choosing this option. Also, make sure you push "Load Game" at the same time. Then follow the instructions onscreen. (Note: If one of the players had quit the game by pushing the ON button, the load game feature will not work. You must select save and quit from the game menu. See "Playing the Game" for more details on this.)

Setup: Select a piece by pushing the button of the piece you want (1-9 for the pieces 1-9, S for spy, B for bomb, and F for flag.) Then push enter to put the piece on the board. To remove a piece, just put another piece over it. The piece will be added back to the number of pieces you have left. (The number of each piece you have left is shown at the top of the screen along with the piece selected.) When you’re done, push clear. If both players are ready, push Y. Make sure both players push Y at the same time.

Playing the game: When it’s your turn, select a piece by pushing enter. Move to where you want to go, then push enter again. To deselect a piece, put the cursor over it and push enter again. That’s about all there is to it. When it’s the other person’s turn, you will wait until they make their move. When they do, it will appear as a question mark moving across the board. The square where the person moved from and the square where they moved to will be highlighted so you can see it easier. Also, when it’s your turn, if you push clear, a menu will come up. You can quit, save and quit, or return to the game. If you quit, the other person will automatically quit too.

Important! Read This!

This is probably the most important thing to know when playing the game: WHEN THE GAME TELLS YOU TO WAIT THEN PUSH ENTER, WAIT THE AMOUNT OF TIME IT SAYS! (Like this: 1 one thousand, 2 one thousand…) It is usually all right if you wait a little longer, but don’t wait for only like a half-second. If you don’t follow this rule, the game will get screwed up and you will have to start over. (Yeah I know, having to wait is stupid…but it’s a BASIC game. That’s just what you have to do. This game should really be made in ASM, but I don’t know assembly programming.)

Not so Important (i.e. history, thanks, e-mail)

Thanks

Thanks to Andy for letting me borrow his calculator for so many months to work on this game while mine was busted.

Thanks to Jeff and Ramie for also letting me borrow their calculators to test the game over those two weekends.

Thanks to Curtis for moral support: "You still haven’t finished that game?"

Thanks to Mom and Dad, for buying me my calc.

Thanks to my math teacher who said all his students should have a TI calc (which was the only reason I have mine).

And most importantly, thanks to you for downloading my game!
