eBooks

Well, I would like to begin by commending the TICT for their ingenious calculator eBooks idea. (I note in parentheses that I do not mean to disregard some of their well-known high-handed practices). I think many people will find calc ebooks worthy and useful whether for an English or History class or for recreation (which I know many of us are lacking).
Then I would like to make an outline of certain developments that I have heard some people in the calculator community would like to take place.
(no particular order)
1) eBooks should have a text select tool like in Acrobat Reader (and a find tool, too)
2) eBooks selection is rather limited. It would be great if the selection were expanded at least to the dimensions of P Gutenberg. Hopefully, the eBook compiler will speed up contributions.
3) what about eMagazines/Journals/Periodicals?
4) what about e-CalcNews?
5) E-MATH textbooks?

In conclusion, I personally hope that the eBooks are going to thrive and otherwise succeed in helping us out in various academic areas and bringing about a viable alternative to calc games.

Besides different formats for the same calc, we have different calcs as well... should we find a better place to discuss this? because it'd be worth it...

Hi everyone! I'm new here. I voted no since I don't read ebooks. You guys seem to be talking about ebooks for the TI-89 and TI-92, so I was wondering if I could get ebooks for other calculators? Thanks for your help. Bye.

Nice idea, but other calcs lack memory! Some books are too big, even for 89! So, this probably won't work unless somebody developes some insane compression routines which can achive up to 80% compression. :(

Yea, I read EBooks...What a great way to get the old classics like war+peace, etc. No other way I could carry them in my backpack all the time.

I voted no, but I really want to, ever since seeing it on Oprah (don't laugh!).

I read E-Books all the time, but not on my TI. If you're going to have an all-purpose electronic companion to store things on, play games with, and read with, it's gotta be a Palm Pilot.

Even with the 2MB versions, it's a great little device. Even has a fully functional serial port. What I'd like to see is a linking program for TI-Palm, so I could store programs on my Palm and swap out when I need to.

Good idea, though Palm computers are not allowed in school and a bit too pricey.

I am really not sure whether or not Palms are allowed in my school, and quite frankly I do not care. I know for a fact that should I get caught, my parents would defend my right to carry it. (yeah I know, its lame, but I don't give a damn) And not to brag or anything, but I did receive mine as a gift. Now if I were to carry a laptop/notebook around, (which I know for a fact are not allowed) then it would be my own damn fault should I get caught.

Depends on your school. But Z80 is sooooooo much eaiser than C. C and C++ are almost as stupid as Java.

ASM FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just started c++ and i had to make a program for the computer that was just cins and couts and It did hex and octal conversions and it was 512k big!

In asm for calc I could do it in less than 1k.

Sure, but if you did it in regular C, it would be just about as small as ASM! Also, C is easier to understand. I tried 68k and hated it!

For on calc programing I love 68k and do not like c because I still think in terms of asm. For computers I do not know intel asm so I have not spoiled myself.

Also I have no need of my calc programs to be portable to the computer.

I agree that Palms are great little gadgets, but I think you are mistaken when you say, "it's gotta be Palm." What I think you meant to say is, "it's gotta be Visor."

Uh-oh, we aren't going to have a Palm/Visor dispute, are we?

I like Palms better than Visors, probably because I have a Palm...

Ya know, there should be a service where you can send your book to some place, and they'll mail back the book along with a disk containing the book in ebook and txtrider format. Of course, that'd be a LOT of typing for the people that do this, but elibrary could do it, couldn't they?

what DOES chicken actually taste like? AND how come so many things taste like chicken? Its a CONSPIRACY!!! (my history teacher made us say that we do not believe in conspiracies but conspiracies ARE REAL!!!)

Anyway, I've read eBooks once or twice, but not much. Its not the same feeling as reading from a book though. I'd rather read a real book than an eBook. My science teacher forces us to wipe our memory every quiz or test, so its not that great to have an eBook or anything at all for that matter on my calculator.

Why dosen't someone write a VB or C++ or some other good langauge program to automate downloading, converting, and publishing to ticalc.org PG eBooks? If done right, a program like this could convert 100s of ebooks in the time it would take to convert, say 10 manually. I would write such a program, but i'm too busy with school...
