Someone had to ask this sometime. :P

I personally prefer to have the freedom to read a book wherever I want--I don't want to have to be stuck in front of the computer to read a book. I mean, I can IRC and websurf without a problem...bah.

No. Usually, the only time I am with my calculator and can't access my books is at school, and I usually have other stuff there (like learning =-/ ). I think that upcoming eBook compatibility for the new TICT shell will increase the likelyhood of my reading books on calc, though. One other thing is that books are probably nicer to read in a book (although I haven't tried TICT eBook Reader *yet*, so I guess I wouldn't quite know what they look like on calc).

Note that the previous post was mainly regarding TI-89 eBooks, since this is a calc site and I assumed it to mean on-calc eBooks. Regarding normal eBooks, I once found and opened Great Expectations so that I could use the "Find" function to locate a quote I wanted for an English paper.

Oh no! You said the "l" word. I thought todays children were all above "learning." I thought the idea of going to school was to see your friends, take naps, and eat lousy food.

As you may have noticed, I was being sarcastic. I believe that although seeing friends, napping, and eating lousy food are all apart of the schooling experience, learning is the main reason we go. By quiting school because we don't want to learn we might turn out like say, Bill Gates. Oh, wait, bad example. I give up.

Actually, it's more like learn in a couple subjects that you like but only act like you're learning in others and do well on tests (without actually learning), so you can get into a good college where you'll learn stuff. High school's all about college.

And you will learn that college is all about sex. And beer too. Sometimes drugs, but not for me. I know some people though... Did I mention sex or beer? I'm getting thirsty. Sure I learn here at college, but I think that all the knowledge that I aquire gets checked at the door with my cover charge to the bar. I'm sure there that others view college differently, but those are the people who will be sitting home tonight all by themselves replying to this message.

Is this off topic?

Well I'm a nerd and I go to a loser college, so college is all about loud dormmates and sitting around being pathetic for me...

A nerd on a TI calculator site? You must be kidding me!

Geek colleges sound kewl, you can play tetris on the sides of buildings and such. A couple of the colleges I'm thinking of are MIT and Carnegie Mellon, both of which should have pretty high nerdity levels.

Yah, I was once a big nerd... I always did the best in all of my classes. Always played calc games. Always had my head in a book. But, I decided to go to the University of Northern Iowa. I live near there. Well, I lived in the dorms the first year as it is manditory for forsh. UNI is a wet campus and my room-mate was a major alcy. So I started drinking with him and life couldn't get any better. I'm not an alcy and I don't condone underage drinking, but it's a real ice breaker and causes you to be a social animal. Now i live life to the fullest. I have been going to college for 3 years and only last semester recieved sophmore status! Maybe I should buckle down and get back on track. But who says you can't turn an 8 year graduate program into 10 or 11 years.

Oh, and for those of you who don't know what a "wet campus" is. It's a campus that allows the consumption of alcoholic beverages by those tenants of the dormitory that are of legal drinking age. I highly recomend going to a college that is wet. You can still achieve a high standard of education and have a little fun at the same time. The best is when you get your instructors to come have a drink after class. Gotta go.

Yeah, I'll be attending a wet campus in the fall (University of Missouri at Rolla). Although, I can't waste 3 years trying to become a sophomore, I can only afford 4 years =) The awesome thing is that they provide small refrigerators in all of the rooms =)

I create my own eBooks instead of reading the ones available. I started this when there was a story someone wrote online and instead of printing out the 33-chapter story, I converted it to eBook. It was much more convenient than reading it on the computer due to the portability. It is also nice to convert any information I find on the internet that would be stupid of me to print out in 15 pages.

eBook wish list.

There are a couple classic pieces of literature in Project Gutenburg that I wanted on
the TI-89 by could not find on this site. However, I do not know how to convert them
myself. If anyone could convert them and stick them on the site that would be very nice.

Here they are:

The Canterbury Tales
Dante's Divine Comedy (the whole thing not just Inferno)
A Tale of Two Cities
As You Like It (a Shakespeare comedy)

I have an 86, otherwise I'd probably help you, but you'd be better off looking at the TICT page (tict.calc.org) and finding out how to do it yourself.

I do the same thing. I convert stories real quick and then read them later. I think that's really the most useful feature of the software.

If I ever get back into writing, I will definately release the stories here in TICT eBook format (even with custom title pictures, hehe). But... I don't have time for writing these days. So maybe that'll never happen, hehe.

Thier own folder
nyall  Account Info

I voted no.

Secondly now is a good time to crab. It is impossible to search through the ti89 miscelaneous asm programs folder with all those ebooks. Go give them thier own folder. After all ticalc.org gives entire folders to level sets and this is no different. And they only need one folder, not two for the 89 and 92p.

I agree.
I wanted to email the ticalc.org dudes but I keep forgetting. They clog up the ASM Programs folder. They need their own. It's hard to search thru for either the ebooks OR the programs.

We are currently working on that, but we need to handle some other issues with the archives first. Trust me, no one wants a seperate folder more than I do. :)

I put all of the Edgar Allen Poe Stories on my 89, cause we were studying him in class and reading alot of his stories. Its pretty cool, I would be sitting there reading on my calc and my teacher would come up to me, thinking he would bust me playing a game, but I was actually reading. I do like ebooks. Right now I'm finishing off some Sherlock Holmes stories.

EBOOKS ARE AWESOME!
I read them all the time on my ti-86 with ATE, well i can only fit about 1/7 of an ebook at a time (about 2 hours worth of reading) but its still cool to read a book on your calculator....if only ate had text compression...

I have developed a fast and efficient text compression/decompression scheme. It works great; however, I am not releasing it just yet. I can't give you any more details because it will be included in an upcoming project of mine which is secret. Sorry.

I tried some compression routines...but it a bit too complicated, ill try again and maybe get something that can get 30% compression...although 50% compression is something to aim for.

Its nice to know someones working on it...
