*Good* Cable, routed thru a LAN (2 Windows boxes, 3 Linux), its great! BTW good cable == Always a stable 200+ KB/sec off *most* ftps (netscape, microsoft, etc), 150+ off many others.

I hope to get a DSL connection within the next six months or so. I don't mind my existing dial-up 56K access that much, but I download a lot of files and maintain a few web sites (www.ti89.org, dss.50megs.com, and others), so I need a fast connection. The only problem is my budget. I have to pay for all of my computer/Internet stuff so my budget is pretty limited, but maybe I can somehow squeeze DSL in there.......

Windows is slow, period. Whenever Windows becomes too unbearable to use, I just launch my Mac emulator and use it to browse the web. Believe it or not, I can use the Internet much faster on my Mac emulator (running on a Celeron 500) than I can in Windows. It maintains a more consistent speed than Windows does. I'd use Linux, too, but I have a crappy Winmodem and Linux won't work it. I don't have a copy of Linux installed right now, anyways. BeOS doesn't work with my modem, either.

BeOS is a very good OS for a PC platform, it just lacks compatibility. Celeron is your problem. Don't move to the gig AMD's quite yet. They aren't very compatible with the new GeForce 2's. The 733 Coppermine is probably the best chip out there right now if bought in a gaming package. A good rule of thumb is to have the nearest bit multiple of half your processor speed, so: I have a 500mhz Celeron, so 256 RDRAM would accompany it nicely. 1Ghz = 512 RDRAM, etc. I don't direct this at anyone in particular.

Hey, I have a 56K dial-up account, with Freedsl.com, and it's great! No Banner ADs, no MPEG TV commercials, and No annoying program that takes 20 seconds to load and shut down. And it's free. Freedsl.com is the way to go! Plus, I'm buying a dsl modem cheap at ebay so I can enjoy freedsl's free dsl service.

Let me get this straight...freedsl *doesn't* have banner ads? I thought it did. If it doesn't, maybe I should switch..I have cable, but it's somewhat expensive and dsl is around as good (especially when windows slows down the internet for any type of access).

freedsl.com does put banners, but only on their DSL service. this guy here is using dialup with them as his ISP (i'm guessing).

from what i have heard and read in the membership agreement, it is not free... you have to switch to there phone company, and they charge a lot... so the dsl service is free, but they still get there $$

Yes, the Dial-up account doesn't have any ads; just a very small toolbar which is actually kind of handy. And the DSL service, @ 144K, is free, with an AD banner box. But they charge more for premium services, which have no ad box, but have speeds up to 1.5 Mb/sec. But they are still quite cheap, with premium services starting @ 9.99/month. I think the way they make money is by charging $200 for their DSL modems. But those are the only costs I know of.
