It would be a very probable thing to do; especially with ones that have have alot of capabilities.
I do not mean to justify the behavior, but state what is likely.

Judging from the ticalc.org mailing list archives (when they used to be up a few thousand or so years ago), people would get their calculators stolen at school all the time. I never had mine stolen because I would never let them leave my sight for a second at any time on any day I brought them to school. They were just too important to me to allow something like that to happen, and I didn't.

Before getting my graphing calculators, I have lost pretty much all my calculators I brought to school. I have not lost any after that.
The scientific I mentioned in another post, that would be the first of which I still have; the old version I think I placed in a drawer, or maybe it is buried. 82 was given to me some time after that; told in profile that I sold it through e-bay, there might have been a chance that its current owner has joined this site. 83+ was given last, mailed it to TI to get an replacement; the replacement I now have, not sure what they did with my old one.

One math class I had in highschool had a way to recover the graphing calculator of each classmate; they had us record the number on a sheet and engrave our name on the back.
There was a time where of coming close to loosing it (with other possessions); the possessions were in my backpack. It turned out that another student had an identical backpack (in outward appearance) and had mistaken my for his; everything had returned next day.

Yeah I had mine stolen right out of my backpack a couple weeks ago, I was really ticked off. I am usually really careful with it... I have my name on it and everything. I don't know why anyone would want it, because I have a password set on startup so they couldn't even use it...

My friend definitely got hers stolen last year
It was a TI 84 plus, I think.
They're expensive, so... it can be expected.

Definitely "bought for me", but the next one will be "paid for it". My parents aren't going to buy me a third calculator now that I'm in college.

All my calcs were a gift; not only the last one, the three times I had to pick between an ordinary gift and a calc..... it was an obvious decision

My last calcs were a TI 85 and some casio calc for 50 cents each at a rummage sale that I bought myself. here is how I got my other calcs:
TI 80: Ebay, bought it
TI 81: Garage sale $5, Bought it
TI 83 P: Bought it, There was a sale on them, ended up paying like $25 for a brand new one
TI 84 SE: For school
TI 85: bought it, 50 cents
TI 86: Free, bought it on ebay, link port did not work, so I got my money back, and they let me keep the calc.
TI 86: Bought it, Brand new in package on ebay for about $50
TI 89 Titanium: Gift
TI 74: not a graphing calc, but bought it on ebay NIB for $70

Voted it being bought for me, but not gift.
It was my 83+. Got it during some day while attending community college; requested it some day earlier than that.

A correction:: I actually bought my last calculator which was a scientific one; bought it because my "old" scientific not working.
Though if this poll is meant for graphing calculators, my earlier post would apply.

Another correction:: My last calculator was actually an 83+ replacement (because of some of the link cable becoming stuck in it).

I paid for my ti-89 titanium new when they first came out.
Got a 89 hw2 for free because it was broken. (I have since fixed it)
I paid some kid $5 for my 82, I have no idea where he would get an 82, and he did not really even know what it was. He just needed money for lunch or something...
