Well, this place is kind of HUGE and to get these results from a team that small does require a lot of work. People on the outside often don't realize how complicated it is to do something, or how the internal institutional politics work.

<rant> Example A: the regulation of teaching in the US and the mania over standardized testing (which almost always results in nine months of How to Beat the Test lessons, whether the student realizes it or not). It is mandatory that they have college degrees, and they even get paid more if they have more college degrees. They went to college to learn their profession, not to hae some lawyer in Washington DC tell them how to do their job! Leave them alone-that's what they went to college for. Go regulate the profession, not the professionals!</rant>

Anyway, they most probably have a lot of work to do, are spread out, probably meet very little, and all have to try to keep on the same page. I can imagine it being very hard, overall.

Wasn't it from The Simpsons? I remember seeing "PURPLE MONKEY DISHWASHER" in a poll here sometime earlier this year. And if I remember correctly, the poll-writer (Morgan?) said he just saw that episode on TV, and I believe it was The Simpsons. So... am I right? :)

Like totally. Mrs. Crabopple (sp?) said it at the end of a sentence when she was giving a speech about going on strike.

Okay, I know exactly what they talk about. They talk about their secret little plan to drive every single member of Ti-calc.org crazy, by sending them the Auto-Reply message for help over and over and over again, even if they never asked for help. I've gotten 7 Auto-Reply messages, which weren't even replying to anything... and I know their doing it on purpose. Okay, well that's my view on things.

I got one auto-reply message saying that I'd sent an e-mail to the webmaster (which I really didn't remember doing), then I sent an e-mail to that address asking what I'd said, and never got a reply. :-D

I imagine that Michael, Magnus, and Niklas (still around?) have a 3 way fight over which kind of programming is better: zshell vs 83+ flash app vs Fargo. Maybe Henrik is teased for for star trek themed new items and remote restarting a server. Actually I don't think we know yet who did that, but I bet he is teased.

Ahh shizzle. I just wrote the whole dang explanation, and as it turned out, I exceeded the 40-character limit. I hit back, but everything was gone. Stupid forms.

Anyway.......

120d means "LOL!" I'm sure you've seen this before. LOL! written in lower case is lol! (you can skip the upper->lower step if you want). lol! in 13375p34k is 101!. Well, 101 happens to be binary, so we take advantage of that and convert it to decimal like so: 101b = 5d. Well, that still doesn't account for the extra exclamation mark at the end, so we use it as a factorial. 5! = 120, so we end up getting 120d.

In a more simplified form: LOL! = lol! = (101b)! = (5d)! = 120d

The idea came from the original conversion of "lol" to 5... and it evolved from that. The decimal suffix looks nicer on the end, anyway.

Now, the reason you'll see it written as 120d//! or 120d\! at times, is because you can't say 120d!. If you want to add the extra emphasis of an exclamation mark, be creative. The two most common ways I've seen of commenting the exclamation marks out so they don't conflict with the math are using comments (//!) or pseudo-escape characters (\!).

That's my (10b)¢.

Couldn't you save even more space by removing the 'd' at the end? Or would that just make it more confusing?

No, the "d" is nessecary, since it tells us it's in decimal form. For all we know, it could be in octal or hex without some form of identification.

Decimal is the preferred and default radix of numbers for humans (using the Arabic numbering system), so without any identifiers it is assumed to be decimal. It's how it is almost everywhere, even in most programming languages like C.

It looks cooler! It evolved from 5 to 120 to 120d, so at one point, it WAS "120"... but I like the d at the end :) Plus, it lets you know that it's decimal.

Using IE, eh? Stupid IE forms. Forms in Mozilla stay in place between Back and Forward; it's pretty nice.
