I voted all the shares, but that's because I'm going to go back to 1970 to "buy" them first. I wouldn't buy 1,000,000 shares at the $18.00 they cost as of this post. I'd rather get paid for buying 'em (who wouldn't?). ;)

Yeah... since "w00t!" tends to me more of an expression used by nerds and such, it's not surprising that a lot of us use or have used it (at one time or another).

I wonder what would happen if this was real stock and it grew like that (at a consistent rate).

Now why would you dis people who say "w00t"? Its not really such nerdy talk as it is gaming talk in my opinion. I use it all the time in warcraft 3. Ready for some somewhat good ascii art that I don't think will work on these forums? lol

***Buys 100 shares of TI stock, for the sole purpose of redeeming myself for falling for the joke***

Not really fell completely, until I clicked "read more and discuss" and saw the returns, I was like "waiiiit a minute"... which caused the stock price to change... which being after wallstreet hours and the market was not open....so i was like "waiiiit anoooother minute".... which caused the price to change again...which reminded me again that the market was not open....and i was like "waiiit a minute".…then I thought “well, maybe it’s futures”…. then I was like “this is supposed to be nonprofit”….and after reading a few replies saying things such as "good joke".etc.etc. I kinda felt cheapish. So I deduced myself out of completely falling for it… *runs away and hides*

If they decided to have stocks, this site would be shut down, because this is a non-profit organization (hence the ".org" in the site name). Although, I believe it WOULD be legal to sell stocks just to pay strictly for the cost of maintaining the site, which, I can imagine is kind of a lot. How much DOES it cost to run this site? Does *cough* magnus *cough* anyone know?

there have always been "free" web hosts. But I recomend you fork over ~$70 a year for the real thing. You get hundreds of hours of entertainment and an oportunity to benefit society. A lot cheeper than many other activities, if you compair cost to benefit.

Not ALWAYS free, but I guess he's right. They have their own server, so...but I'm pretty sure that not all .org's are free. I think the only requirement is that it be a non-profit ORGanization...

There is no requirement, as there is no way to prove your tax-exempt status to an ISP.

Not true in the USA. You can contact a certain official in the executive branch of your state government to get forms so you can be officially incorperated as a 501 C3 nonprofit. Not much point in bothering if you don't expect donations of at lease a few hundred dollars annualy.

What I was saying was that you could be using anybody's forms-there's no way to verify your identity.

Some groups offer free hosting for organizations incorperated as a 501C3 (a registered nonprofit in the USA). The cost of getting a domain named .org from a domain registrar is about $10/year on the free market. You also have to pay for a server, by either buying, building, or renting (buying hosting). I rent part of the server for my site, cesdep.org, for $5 a month. Usually, if you rent a server, you don't have to pay for a connection. TiCalc.org, because it has it's own server and beowolf cluster of TI-81s, must pay a bill for a fast internet connection, as well as the domain registration, electricity, any proprietary software, etc.

Funny, nerds who don't know how the internet works! And that's not the half of it.

Actually, that's more about how the World Wide Web works. The internet is actually not composed of web pages. It's simply a standard way for computers to send information (packets) to each other. This is called Internet Protocal. Please feel free to correct the details of my statements. Probably the best place to go to learn about how the internet works is Wikipedia.org.

The ONLY thing that nonprofits CANNOT do to make money is sell stock. That is the legal definition of a nonprofit. If ticalc.org did that and had actual income it would be illegal because they aren't incorporated and are nonprofit. They would have to incorporate, notify the IRS (or the Swedish version thereof), and fill out a 38-page tax return every year. Not likely.

Why would someone want stock from something that does not make a profit? I always thought that stocks that don't pay dividends were a fictional asset... not that I don't own any. As long as no one knows they aren't worth anything, they will be worth enough to get me through college.

Nonprofits can make a profit. The ONLY thing they can't do is sell stock.
