nah, still have my ti-89. its gone through the wash, been dropped stepped on, had all kinds of drinks spilled on it and it STILL WORKS!

I've had my 89 knocked off of a two foot high desk more than 2 dozen times! Its six years old now and is in perfect working condition!

You know those small Nokia phones? They are great. My flat mate decided to drop his about 10' to prove it would bounce. It did (although the carpet helped).

My other flat mate shoved his through the wash at 50. A few days later it was working again! - the chips should have been fried.

The first flat mate, after not being content with the dropping exercise, threw his over his shoulder into our flat (we were outside with ice-cream). It bounced off the wall with a loud crack. - The only thing broken was the on/off switch that had been knocked off the board - two smears of solder later....

MOst things will bounce under the proper conditions. As long as enought energy is transfered back into the object (given that it is elestic enough) at impact it will bounce. There are few if any in-elastic collisions in the real world. Here is a great eample of a very good elastic example, poll or billards.

well, for that matter, what do you expect to break? The whole thing is basically one big chip, with screen and linkport, all glued together well. I would guess the first thing to go would be the linkport, and the screen could get knocked out of alingment somewhat, but other than that, droping off of a low height could do little damage.

dare i mention the rugged plastic casing? plastic is highly versatile, strong yet elastic enough to survive many falls (i'm curious how it survived a run thru the wash... but i'm not going to experiment). "plastics make it possible" ®

Most devices are fine upto something like 10'. They don't have much speed from normal human height.
The circuit board can easily chip before the plastic - it is not that uncommon (or solder joints failing).
Caacs and phones etc are more than just one chip - memory is not part of the processor (normally - although I haven't yet looked) There is likely to be a seperate chip to handly the display.
Regardless of what current is passing through a chip, getting it wet can damage it - corrosion is a big problem as the tracks inside are very small and close together.)
50*C should generally be hot enough to knacker a lot of chips not specifically designed for high temperatures.
I don't know how well LCDs hold up to the wash (although it seems pretty good).

Except HDDs, they are only made to fall about 6 inches (~15 cm) on a good day.
