Re: Who makes the best calculators?

These surveys are pretty nice, but when i saw the results i was shocked. (not really) Talk about a landslide (of 9 votes). I wanted to vote over and over on casio for fun to see how people might reply, but i can only vote once...

My vote is TI all the way!

Well, DON'T! If you think TI is the best, then vote for TI! I hate it when people vote for something when they really think something else.

while of course i voted for ti, but i do have to say that HP makes great calcs too. They take a while to get used to but RPN is nice, and best of all, no one knows what the numbers mean so they dont know to not allow it.

RPN is great when the screen can display the whole stack, and you don't want to type much. There was a palm version that utterly sucked, with a stack that went on infinetly, so the last item did not fill the next space, if you know what I mean.

yes, that is what hp does, though you may be able to turn that setting off, though you can also set it to non rpn mode

also, hp can handle huge numbers, if i remember right, it will give you every digit in 500! and some how they are faster at math than 89 even processor is much slower.

but still i say TI ROCKS!!!!!

Oh man! That flash app is so awsome! It is lightning fast. It only takes 4 seconds to calculate a graph! That is a fast 3D grapher. It's called Graph^3 for you people that don't know.

83+ probably is faster due to lower resolution?

I asked the same thing when the news article for it came up here... The author of the program stated that it would still be faster if the 89 used the same type of algorithms (not precisely what he said, but I'm to lazy to look up the actual post...)

It's because Graph^3 was made by Detached Solutions, but the 89 grapher is made by TI Programmers who don't know how to program.

Reasons:
The TI-89 version was written in C.
The TI-89 has a bigger resolution (though, back at that article, I remember him saying that wasn't the reason)
The TI-89 version wasn't written as efficiently

That has nothing to do with it, though, cause it doesn't use the extra speed, or I dont think so at least... I think the main reason is the efficiency of the code :)

Yes, it does use that extra speed. Here's a test:

1) Get an 83+ and an 83+SE side-by-side.
2) Press ON on each.
3) Press Y= on each.
4) Enter X for Y1 on each.
5) Simultaneously press GRAPH on each.
6) Note that the 83+SE gets done about twice as fast as the 83+.

I did this once w/ my 83+ and my teacher's 83+SE w/ viewport...

But then as a twist, type in 1 for the first y=, 2 for the second, and repeat as necessary on the 83+ and SE. Then on the 83+, but the XRes to 8, and press graph on both. The 83+ is a lot faster than the SE. I did that to my friend, and he couldn't figure out why my calc was faster than his SE. lol

It's the accuracy that the calculator graphs to. It graphs to every X pixel where X is the Xres setting.

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!!! HP is MUCH faster with 3D graphing...or at least the 49g is...I still like the 98-IT (no_one_ said to say it like that :) ) though. Better user interface and there's a "home" button...HP you have to hit ON like 4 times to get back to the home screen....GO TI!!!

the HP can do large factorials faster than the 89...200! is done like TWICE as quick. The wierd thing is, that 5! takes longer on the HP...like 1.5 seconds!

I think the TI-89 can handle huge factorials. (Well, I know it does 100!) Yeah, it writes all the digits for up to 299!, and then, around 500!, it writes either 500! or just infinity.

Doing 299! will take 14 seconds to calculate and display on the ti89. The 49g can do it in 3 secondes.

Doing 299! in the hail expression writer will take less than two seconds. Sorry for the plug :)

The hp49g is capable of doing 9999!, but it takes a really long time.

What is Reverse Polish Notation, anyway?

Reply to this comment    5 April 2003, 23:44 GMT

Re: Re: Re: Re: Who makes the best calculators?
yahoolian

Normal: (first symbol) operator (second symbol), e.g. 3 + 4 * 2
RPN (reverse polish notation): 4 2 * 3 +

It simplifies the hardware because all the hardware does is whenever it sees a number it adds the number to the stack (define stack in the sense of a stack of cards), and whenever it sees an operator it takes two numbers off the stack, does the operation and puts the result on the stack.

With RPN there is no need to scan the whole equation to preserve order of operations such as multiply coming before addition, and there a way to write any expression in RPN without parentheses.

I know what the stack is (in terms of z80 programming), but not the RPN.

The stack is a... well, "stack" of values in the memory that are accessed in a "put one on the top" "take one off the top" (PUSH/POP) fashion. I'd assume here, they mean to use the stack to simplify/solve equations.
